Yeah, okay. Can anyone say ‘scare tactics’?
There’s a post going around saying, “If you’re sceptical of hackers, read this,” and that’s great, sure, but if you follow the link on that page to here, you’ll see (if you scan yourself) that Tumblr has A+, A and A+ grades against the current alleged weakness. Tumblr’s servers are not run by pigeon post, guys.
There was definitely at least one person that sent hate, but to be quite frank with you guys, it was obviously someone in the fandom, a smallish blog that was desperate for attention that sent themselves hate, and then others to stir a reaction. This whole event happened because a ton of people jumped to defend those in receving hate. That’s admirable, it really is. I won’t lie, I was taken in for a while. The thing is, it’s all been a huge attention spree that’s genuinely hurt others. Some have felt sick that they couldn’t help the people that they wanted to help. Some have stayed online for hours upon hours to care for people. Some have been affected by the hating individual. Some have been seriously triggered.
I’m going to make a shocking statement now, so bear with me:
I’m one of the people in this fandom that would be most likely to receive hate.
No, I don’t want it, but let’s be logical a second. I don’t go on about it, but followers that have been here a while know that I’m severely depressed, disabled, suffer an acute lack of self-esteem, genuinely hate myself, have attempted suicide on a number of occasions and fight suicidal thoughts every day. I’m also a pure Supernatural blog. I also write the darkest stories in the fandom — on Tumblr, at least. I’m a prime target for abuse. How many messages of hate did I get? None.
(Now, if I suddenly receive some? Guaranteed that it’s a member of the fandom that’s both embarrassed and angry about what I’ve just said.)
Does anyone honestly believe that 4chan is going to discuss how to attack Tumblr on Omegle underneath the Supernatural tags to tell people what’s going to happen? Uh. No. When they hack, the major 4chan/Anonymous Twitter accounts announce what they’re doing as they’re doing it.
I get that people are lonely. I get that the holidays can be really tough. But c’mon. A number of those sent hate used exactly the same writing style as their url. A lot of what happened was pure bandwagon-ing. Nothing is going to happen. Jensen’s account isn’t going to get hacked.
This was all an attack from inside the Tumblr fandom. It was at least one bitter, small blog that was sick of getting no attention that sent awful things to other little blogs, and then others took it upon themselves to send themselves messages because they needed the attention from the family at large, too. That’s it. There’s no conspiracy, there’s no dark plan.
Can everyone just calm down now, please?
After reading this, I don’t understand how I could have been so oblivious.
Whoever sent hate to me, to anyone, I don’t care how many messages you sent - just the fact that you sent them is sickening. You fucked me up, and I should have pondered the possibilities before reacting.
To fake your own hate mail, possibly your own suicide, is offensive and downright fucked up.
I don’t know what to believe anymore.
